The map you grew up with is wrong about size

On 4 September 2026 the UN General Assembly voted 164 to 1 to “Correct the Map”. It asks schools, governments and tech companies to use Equal Earth, a projection that draws every country at its true relative area, instead of Mercator, the 1569 navigation chart that stretches land near the poles. On Mercator, Greenland looks the size of Africa. Africa is 14 times bigger.

Try it: tap any country to lift a copy. Drag it anywhere and it re-sizes to what it would look like there. Flick it and it coasts. Zoom in for cities. Then flip to Equal Earth and watch the distortion vanish.
